چکیده

Instrumental intelligibility metrics are commonly used as an alternative to intelligibility listening tests. This paper evaluates 12 existing monaural intrusive instrumental intelligibility metrics: SII, HEGP, CSII, HASPI, NCM, QSTI, STOI, ESTOI, MIKNN, SIMI, SIIB, and sEPSM. The intelligibility data used in the evaluation were obtained from ten listening tests described in the literature. The stimuli included speech that was distorted by additive noise, reverberation, competing talkers, pre-processing enhancement, and post-processing enhancement. STOI, which is arguably the most popular intelligibility metric, achieved a correlation with listening test scores on average of ρ = 0.80, and its successor, ESTOI, achieved ρ = 0.86. The metrics with the highest overall performance were SIIB (ρ = 0.92) and HASPI (ρ = 0.89). The results show that many intelligibility metrics perform poorly on data sets that were not used during their development, thus caution should be taken when using intelligibility metrics to replace listening tests, especially in situations where the accuracy of the metric has not been verified.

Performance Comparison of Intrusive Objective Speech Intelligibility and Quality Metrics for Cochlear Implant Users

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of six intrusive objective measures as intelligibility predictors of degraded speech for cochlear implant (CI) users. Three practical environmental degradation scenarios are considered: reverberation alone, additive noise alone, and noise-plus-reverberation. A subjective intelligibility test was performed with eleven cochlear implant users and objectiv...

Delft University of Technology An intelligibility metric based on a simple model of speech communication

Instrumental measures of speech intelligibility typically produce an index between 0 and 1 that is monotonically related to listening test scores. As such, these measures are dimensionless and do not represent physical quantities. In this paper, we propose a new instrumental intelligibility metric that describes speech intelligibility using bits per second. The proposed metric builds upon an ex...

A non-intrusive objective speech intelligibility metric tailored for cochlear implant users in complex listening environments

In this work, we propose a speech intelligibility metric tailored for CI users, termed SRMR-CI. This metric is based on the speech-to-reverberation modulation energy (SRMR) measure, which has been shown to correlate well with speech quality and intelligibility for normal hearing listeners. Our proposal extends SRMR to improve its correlation to CI speech intelligibility based on three main modi...

On speech intelligibility estimation of phase-aware single-channel speech enhancement

To reduce time and costs in the development process of noise reduction algorithms, an objective intelligibility measure is crucial. Such a measure has to show high correlation with speech intelligibility determined by real listening experiments. In the past several measures were found that perform reliable in a particular scenario when only the spectral amplitude of a noisy signal is modified. ...

Comparing Binaural Pre-processing Strategies I: Instrumental Evaluation.

In a collaborative research project, several monaural and binaural noise reduction algorithms have been comprehensively evaluated. In this article, eight selected noise reduction algorithms were assessed using instrumental measures, with a focus on the instrumental evaluation of speech intelligibility. Four distinct, reverberant scenarios were created to reflect everyday listening situations: a...
